Susie, in position and ready for a shot on the counter top set. Susie has the materials ready for her Episode 14 craft project.
Jill (Susie) Fred, and Chris (also Fred) run through a take just before the show's bible story. Fred is upset with the outcome of the Help Contest.
Jill and Chris run lines in rehearsal before filming the show's tease scene. Fred finds "prizes" in a Lost and Found box.
Production coordinator Ingrid stands in as Susie's arm for Fred's close-up shots. The counter is raised on boxes to provide enough room for Chris to operate Fred without being seen.
Fred, Susie, and director David are running a scene for the camera. It's a big room until the camera, sets, props, and lights are loaded in.
Episode 14 is the first show to use our new puppet studio. Here, Chris, Fred, and David rehearse a Fred lecture spot in Susie's craft project.
Chris prepares to run the scene for the camera. He has a monitor to watch how Fred appears in the shot and make sure he's looking the correct direction!
Nole-Tasha, Noel-the-Mole's little sister, makes her debut in Episode 14. Here she is waiting to film on her daisy garden set while the crew conducts a lighting check.
The daisy set is was built just for Episode 14, and is now a regular feature in Fred and Susie's backyard. This set fills much of the new puppet studio!
The cast is dressed and ready for a full-day Saturday shoot during the first weekend in May. All of the backyard scenes, as well as the bible story scenes are scheduled for the day's work.
Craig runs Edward through his paces for the show 14 Memorize It segment. We can't film Edward on a green screen because he's green already, so we use a blue screen instead.
Chris preps one of the sheep for a scene later in the day. Everyone of the team have run the sheep at some point, and today, both Chris and Craig used this sheep for various scenes.
Fred and Sherman are holding their positions while cameraman Ben sets up the focus. You can see Sherman's mouth in the monitor at lower right!
Chris, Fred, Sherman, and Craig pose for the camera before filming a scene from Show 14. They are on the backyard set.
Nole-Tasha, run by David, and Fred, run by Chris, work through a scene on the new Daisey set. Nole-Tasha now lives in Fred and Susie's backyard.
Susan works through her lines with Kelsey before one of her scenes. Kelsey is a relative newcomer to the cast, and she will be featured in several upcoming shows. Susan has also provided the voice for Mini the Sheep.
Cameraman Ben sets up the next shot. For the past year or so, Ben has served as a technical consultant for the Fred and Susie Show. For episode 14, we've finally pulled him into a more active role filming the puppet scenes.
Our new puppet studio space has nearly three-times as much square-footage as our old studio space, allowing for bigger sets, and places to put set pieces that are waiting to be used in the next scene. It may look like chaos, but it's not really!
Puppets have foam-rubber arms, so they cannot carry heavy objects. To pass this book from Fred to Pete, the puppeteers hold the book from below, with their fingers just out of camera shot!
Susan plays Kelsey in show 14. In this scene, Kelsey's hat has blown into a tree in the park, and she is waiting for Fred to come to her rescue.
The bible story for show 14 is the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector. Here Chris operates Andy the yellow puppet, dressed as the Pharisee, while Craig operates Pete, a humble farmer.
Craig relaxes between takes on the studio's fainting couch. Craig voices regular F&S characters Edward the frog, Fred's good friend Sherman, Pete the old guy, and Tim the pig.
For this scene, the pharisee (Andy) needs to be able to spread his arms wide. This requires two puppeteers - Chris controls the body and left hand, while Susan operates the right hand.
Sometimes, working puppets around the set pieces isn't so easy. While Craig can sit in front of the fence, Chris needs to be sandwiched between it and the hills, and David has to work from under the fence rigging!
In this scene the tax collector (Edward - played by Craig) pays a call on the widow (Kelsey - played by Susan). David directs the scene watching the puppet action on the TV monitor, just out of shot.
Ben, Chris, and Craig take a minute to discuss the next shot with David, and to pose for the camera in the process.
Fred and Baxter the pig have a short scene together in Show 14. Although David is running Bax for the shot, Chris is still voicing both characters in the scene - a very tricky business!
